Today, Gov. Doug Ducey appointed Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery to the Arizona Supreme Court. ACLU of Arizona Executive Director Alessandra Soler made the following statement:
“Gov. Ducey chose the most unqualified candidate on the list to serve on the highest court in Arizona. In the process, he showed complete disregard for Arizona’s most marginalized communities who’ve been deeply hurt by Montgomery’s harsh and intolerant policies. Let’s be clear: Montgomery would have never been considered for this seat if he weren’t allowed to operate with unchecked power for a decade as county attorney. The 2020 Maricopa County Attorney’s election is now a wide-open race. The Campaign for Smart Justice will be out in full force to ensure each voter is aware of the deep history of misconduct and corruption within the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Similarly, we will be pressuring each candidate to commit to reducing the prison population, challenging racism in the criminal legal system, and ending the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office’s infamous history of prosecutorial misconduct once and for all.”
