How to Make a “Know Your Rights” Zine

Join the ACLU of Arizona’s DIY zine campaign! Follow this tutorial to learn how to print and fold the double-sided zine that’s translated in English and Spanish.

No matter our immigration status, we all have rights under the Constitution. It’s up to us to make sure everyone in our community knows their rights when approached by police, ICE, and border patrol. You can help get this information out by joining the ACLU of Arizona’s do-it-yourself zine campaign!

Printing recommendations

The “Know Your Rights with Police, ICE, and Border Patrol” zine is intended to be printed in full color and double-sided on letter paper that is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Grayscale prints will work, too.

If you are printing at home:

  • When making prints, make sure your printer settings are set to “actual size” or scaled to print at 100% (sometimes you need to click on "more settings" to see these options).
  • Printing the zine: If you cannot print double sided, you can print copies of page 1 first, and then feed the sheets of paper back into the printer to print page 2 on the other side. You may want to run a test page to make sure you print on the correct side.
  • Printing the Red Cards: Cardstock is recommended, but make sure the paper color is light enough for black ink to be easily legible. You can either print on both sides following the instructions above, or print single sided and fold the cards in half.

If you are printing at a print shop (recommended for high volume printing):

  • Most print shops can print double-sided and offer a variety of paper types (including card stock for the red cards). You can ask or check their website for recommended paper types for double-sided printing.

Watch the first 1.5 minutes of this tutorial to learn how to fold a zine!

  1. Fold your page page in half lengthwise, then open it back up
  2. Fold your page in half widthwise, then open it back up
  3. Fold both short edges of the page toward the middle creases, then open them back up
  4. Fold the page in half widthwise again and cut from the middle crease to the quarter fold, but only cutting half way down the paper
  5. Open the page back up and fold the page in half lengthwise again
  6. Push the two ends in towards each other to create a star or X shape.
  7. Find the cover (page 1) and the last page (page 8) and fold all the pages together so they create a booklet, with all other pages sandwiched between page 1 and page 8.
  8. To change the language that’s facing out, follow steps 5 - 7 again, but fold in the opposite direction.

Red Card cutting instructions

  1. If printing double-sided: using a paper trimmer or scissors, cut along all of the horizontal and vertical dotted lines of the page.
  2. If printing single-sided: cut along the outer edge of the cards to trim off the margins, then make horizontal cuts only.
    • Fold the cards in half on the short edge so each card has an explanation of constitutional rights on one side and a script to read or show to law enforcement on the other side.
  3. Put at least one red card between the pages of the zine. You can use paper clips to hold them together or store them with the pages up and spines down so that the cards do not fall out until you begin distributing.

Distributing your zines

Now that you’ve assembled your zines, you can take these out into your community! We’d love to see and share photos of your zine-making gatherings, work-in-progress, and photos of zines in the wild. Tag us at:

If you're not on social media, you can email us at communications@acluaz.org with your photos and a brief description of how many zines you made and where you distribute them!

It’s on all of us to protect each other in these difficult times. We cannot allow Trump’s extreme anti-immigrant agenda to tear our communities apart. Together, we can make sure as many people in Arizona know their rights as possible. Happy folding!

P.S. if you don’t have the time or interest in making the zine version of the ACLU of Arizona’s “Know Your Rights with Police, ICE, and Border Patrol” but need to print and share this information quickly, you can download handouts here:
