MESA—The Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix and the ACLU of Arizona Campaign for Smart Justice are teaming up to host the first candidate town hall ahead of the 2020 Maricopa County Attorney’s Race.
The town hall will take place tonight, Thursday, January 30 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at The Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix located at 627 W. Rio Salado Pkwy, Mesa, Arizona, 85201.
Confirmed candidates are Democrats Tamika Wooten, Bob McWhirter, Julie Gunnigle, Ryan Tait, and Will Knight. Current Republican Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel did not return an invitation to attend.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will have a chance to meet and greet with the candidates and submit questions to be asked during the program.
"As a community of skeptics and freethinkers, candidate town halls like this are essential," said HSGP Executive Director Luke Douglas. "Whoever our next County Attorney may be, they'll be elected to serve their constituents of all faiths and of no faith at all. It is a privilege to facilitate this conversation and learn more about the candidates' positions on the separation of church and state and other issues important to Humanists."
“The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has a history of corruption and scandal that’s fueled our mass incarceration crisis,” said ACLU of Arizona Campaign Strategist Analise Ortiz. “Voters must know whether the candidates will commit to reforming the office and reducing the prison population and how they plan to get us there.”
