Panel Discussion: Suspended for Missing Class

April 14, 2023 @ 3:30 pm 5:00 pm

Keeping students in class is more critical than ever, but missing school or arriving late can lead to suspension in Arizona. This creates a compounding effect that puts students behind and has long-term consequences for their future.

In 2022, investigative journalists Tara García Mathewson and Maria Polletta analyzed data from over 150 districts and charter networks to understand how widespread suspensions for truancy were in Arizona. They found significant racial disparities between those who are subjected to this type of discipline and those who are not. And while some schools have re-evaluated disciplinary practices for absences and tardies, there’s more work to be done.

During this virtual event, panelists will discuss the findings of the report, and share their experiences and perspectives as students, school board members, and lawmakers. Join us on April 14 to learn more about the problem and how we can work to find solutions that better support Arizona students.
